Dulwich Festival Youth Film Competition 2024: Rules

Please ensure you read the rules carefully before entering the competition. Entry implies acceptance of all the rules and failure to comply may result in disqualification.

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to those aged 11-18 on the closing date of the competition. Entrants under 18 must have a parent/guardian permission to enter. If you are aged 17 or under, please make sure you ask a parent or guardian to complete the entrant details part of the form. Films can also be entered by a parent/guardian, teacher or other adult on behalf of a young person or group of young people.
  • The work must be solely made by those named as the artist(s), up to a maximum of 3 participants.
  • Any music, video or still images used in the film should be cleared for use by the copyright holder or be copyright free. With this submission, the applicant confirms that they possess all rights necessary for the screening of the submitted film online or at the Dulwich Festival.
  • You must NOT feature the surnames of any young people under the age of 18, anywhere in the film, including the titles and credits. Dulwich Festival are committed to the protection and safety of young people, and the addition of surnames in your films can compromise this. If surnames are included in your film, your entry may be disqualified.
  • The entries will not be judged on technical ability alone. Judges will use the following criteria to make their decisions on the winning film:
    Idea – the film idea is original and creative and has been delivered well.
    Story – the story is strong and engaging and captures the audience’s attention.
    Sound – the music, sound effects and dialogue are clear and strengthen the narrative.
    Look – the use of camera angles, movement, lighting and framing support the narrative.
  • The submissions can be any format – landscape / portrait and filmed on phone / film camera.
  • Please ensure the content of the film is appropriate. Films that appear to condone or encourage risky behaviours will not be permitted. Please avoid swearing and offensive language and showing risky behaviours such as drug taking, smoking and violence.
  • Applicants may enter as many eligible films as they wish. A separate entry form and upload is required for each film submission.
  • We reserve the right to use extracts from submissions for festival publicity and marketing purposes.
  • Dulwich Festival will not comment on individual films or selection decisions either prior to or following submission or selection/rejection.
  • The Dulwich Festival reserves the right to amend these rules where it is deemed necessary to do so. Any changes to the rules will be posted on the Dulwich Festival website.

Prizes

The Dulwich Festival will award the following prizes:

  • 1st Prize £100 and 2nd Prize £75 will be identified at the discretion of the judges.

The winners films may be shown on the Dulwich Festival website and social media discretion of the Dulwich Festival Management Team. The Dulwich Festival reserves the right to amend these rules where it is deemed necessary to do so. Any changes to the rules will be posted on the Dulwich Festival website.

Judging

  • The entries are judged anonymously.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no individual correspondence can be entered into.
  • Judges are unable to comment on individual entries.
  • Judging is fair and unbiased.
  • The Dulwich Festival reserves the right to change the panel of judges without notice.

Results

  • Winners will be notified by email.
  • The Prize giving will take place on Saturday 11th May at Kingswood House, Dulwich, London.
  • The 2024 results will be posted on the Dulwich Festival website.
